Fenolische kunststof is een harde en brosse thermohardende kunststof, beter bekend als bakelietpoeder. Het heeft een hoge mechanische sterkte, taaiheid, slijtvastheid, stabiele maatvoering, corrosiebestendigheid en uitstekende elektrische isolatie. Het is geschikt voor de productie van isolatiecomponenten voor elektrische apparaten en instrumenten en is vervormbaar onder vochtige en warme omstandigheden.
1. De vervormbaarheid is goed, maar de krimp en richtingsgevoeligheid zijn over het algemeen groter dan die van aminoplastics, en ze bevatten vluchtige stoffen zoals water. Voorverwarmen moet vóór het vormen plaatsvinden en de uitlaatgassen moeten tijdens het vormen worden afgevoerd. Indien niet voorverwarmd, moeten de matrijstemperatuur en de matrijsdruk worden verhoogd.
2. De matrijstemperatuur heeft een aanzienlijke invloed op de vloeibaarheid en over het algemeen zal de vloeibaarheid snel afnemen als deze de 160 graden overschrijdt
3. De uithardingssnelheid is over het algemeen lager dan die van aminokunststoffen en de warmte die vrijkomt tijdens het uitharden is groter. De interne temperatuur van grote, dikwandige kunststof onderdelen is snel te hoog, wat kan leiden tot ongelijkmatige uitharding en oververhitting.
